    Oil recommendations

I have not changed the oil yet, oil was clean when I bought the car and I have not put many miles on it in a year. I've done searches on recommended oil for a 427 SO, but have not made a decision. Anyone want to make a recommendation?

    Thank you...

    Silver,

I knew that question was coming and I’m embarrassed to say, I don’t know. Previous owner couldn’t provide me with much information. Sorry I’m not much help either.

Either way use a high zinc oil. I use Driven HR2 (formerly Joe Gibbs) 10w-30. In addition to zinc it has cling additives for engines that sit for long periods of time. My engine builder recommended it.

Well don't worry. Either Nomad or WaffleHead will be along shortly to take the thread off topic.

That’s another thing I like about this forum, you guys dig on each other, like brothers do and no one takes it personal.

    George,

I have used Mobil 15/40 Super/syn for years in my big block with the flat tappet cam and had no problems. I use Rotella 15/40 in the Coupe with all roller cam and lifters and it has never caused any problems.

I use Valvoline VR1 as recommended by my engine builder. It has a high zinc content.

I am running a solid flat tappet cam and also use Valvoline VR1. Seems to be working fine.

If you don't know the type of lifter I would stick with a high ZDDP oil like Brad Penn or Joe Gibbs. I use 20W-50 Joe Gibbs non-synthetic with my flat tappet cam on the recommendation of Keith Craft. The 10W-30 was OK but at hot idle in hot weather the oil pressure would drop a little below 20 psi and I like to keep it around 20 or above on personal preference. Actually, that's sort of a rule of thumb for me any more - use the lightest weight oil that will still give me 20 psi at hot idle on a hot day.

Thank you and it's definitely going to be one of the two.

This VERY lengthy article is pretty interesting for some of us anal gearheads. The author is a bit full of himself, but his testing of motor oils is as in-depth as I've encountered and his philosophy about film strength being the most important factor for an oil's ability to prevent wear is interesting. You can use your own judgement concerning his findings.
