    Carl,

The spare tire was a requirement of the racing body. No one can change a flat on a race track. It is like the luggage compartment requirement for the first GT-40s at LeMans. What Shelby did was have two small aluminum boxes, one near each rear wheel and they would just hold a normal sized woman's purse but that satisfied the requirement for a luggage compartment. Some rules are ridiculous for a race car.

The Cobra in its natural environment. The Shelby American entry of Dan Gurney and Jerry Grant thunders through the sun baked Sicilian hills during the torturous 1964 Targa Florio. Gurney and Grant managed an 8th place finish behind the victorious Porsche 904 GTS.

Not Cobra specific but I think its interesting enough to share...

Bill Cosby is a car guy. He has a great story about how Carroll Shelby delivered one of his two 1966 Cobra Super Snakes to Cosby’s home. Cosby was so convinced the car would kill him if he drove it any further, that he handed the keys back to the delivery man and asked him to deliver it to George Wallace (then the pro-segregation governor of Alabama.) So who better to hock Fords than a guy who already had a love affair with their V8 Cobras? Cosby also has a great Ferrari story he uses in his act, but for some reason they never needed him to move their metal:

    Gian,

His 200 MPH Album was always one of my favorites and when he used to have his show on TV here many years ago he had a Thunderbird that he got a lot of laughs about. One of my favorite lines was when his wife was about to have the baby and he was rushing her to the hospital and she said I can't wait and he said, "I told her if you get that mess on the seats of my Ferrari I am going to kick you out by the side of the road."
