    Hill Climb in a Cobra...

Racing up a hill, very fast, through twisty corners, add some gravel and sheer drops... in a Cobra...
    That’s ok, just call me a sissy…

Back in the 70's I was living in Colorado and worked for Firestone. We supplied the hill climb tires. They were made with crushed walnut shells in them and we had to groove the tires by hand. You could see the brown specs from the shells in the rubber. Just a little FYI....

    Jack,

What was the idea of using the crushed Walnut Shells. I used to watch that race on TV and it amazed me at how close some of them came to going over the edge. I have never been to the top but have passed by Pikes Peak a couple of times and it is kind of intimidating to me to thing of racing up that thing.

The yellow and now green car is Randy Schantz's Shell Valley, I met Randy at Run & Gun in St. Louis a few years ago. Very interesting guy, watched him change rearends between road course and drags. For awhile he had the record on PP for alt fuel, may still.

    Ron,

The rubber was soft, but wouldn't last to the top of the mountain. That was their idea of making the tires last. Race weekend they would grade the road so that it was pretty smooth. I've gone up to the top the day after the race and it's actually a nice ride. I could never raced full bore up the mountain, knowing that it's a long way over the side, and also there's a couple of corners where you're climbing and going into a sweeping corner at the same time, while looking directly into the sun.

Interesting that those cars don't appear to have any mods, to create down-force on the front end?

I know our cars can get pretty light on the front end at higher speeds, but you would think front end down-force would also make for better handling in the corners as well, especially on gravel/dirt..

    Knysna Hillclimb race South Africa.

    Off to a good start...

... but then lost it a bit through a bend...

No major damage and could finish the race to the top. No win though...

Not BF's this time round. Would not even try this type of thing with the old 400 tread wear BF's.
