Anytime Bud. Just remember to call 052 ↨¥#%*╫¼ when you land. Oh crap, seems like a virus is attacking the numerical values on my PC!:crazy

Seriously, we've got some major car fanatics down here. Anything from the blinged up, 4 cyl turbo-ed Jap car crowd to the full import exotic guys and then of course the V8-/muscle-/classic car group. Car crazy I tell you. We love cars!

So when are you coming over for a visit?

This country does have a few issues, but in general it's a great place to live in. And as for visiting here, the exchange rate always favours visitors.

Still at the 2008 South African Street Rod Nationals.

Nomad, owning a Can Am Cobra, you might find this an interesting read.

A cheeky car known in South Africa as the Chevrolet Can-Am, also referred to as "The Little Chev". The "Can-Am" was based on the 4 cylinder Chevrolet Firenza but the 4 cylinder was replaced with a 302ci Chevrolet power plant. Further improvements included a beefed up suspension, 4 spoke aluminum wheels and the American Racing rear wing. The original color was the white with black bonnet combo.

More on this little car here:

Thank-Q, Q for the CanAm Firenza link. Very interesting read, and once more a car that I wan't aware existed.
Up here in Canada, I vaguely remember GM marketing a plain jane Firenza. I have spent most of my life, trying to eradcate it's existance from my mind. It was an anemic little whelp, that should have been drowned at birth.
On a brighter note, they were not often seen, read bought.

    Cheers

Another little car that was unique to South Africa actually came out of the Ford stall- named the Capri Perana. Here is a link to some information on the Perana.

    Q,

Now that is an interesting car and I bet when set up it will be quite competitive. I wouldn't mind having a street version of it just to watch the people try to figure out what it is. Thanks for the link as it was interesting. I used to think the Australian Car Club had the largest bunch of interesting cars but I don't think they can come close to what you have there.

Nomad, on your way down to visit Q, stop by and pick me up.

    Ron :crazy

I think I'm still getting to the "interesting cars", but that is my opinion.

Nomad, Ron and Stu- maybe the airline will give a discount on a group booking? Next BIG car show coming up on 7 August...
But if you guys can't make it, I'll just keep testing the limits of this site and post everything.

Pics from the Merrickville car show (July 10, 2011)

Q, love the hidden toolkit on that last one. Cool idea.

Yesterday was the annual classic car show in historic Merrickville. This is one of the nicest shows in eastern Ontario and attracts hundreds of cars from both Quebec and Ontario.

I didn't expect to go as I was tied up with my daughter's soccer tournament, but through a strange turn of events our tournie ended early and I "found" about two hours in the afternoon. So I gathered up my 7-year old nephew David -- a young car guy whose parents have NEVER taken him to a car show -- and took him to see the cool rides. Here are some pics from the show, clipped (once more) from the gang at the Hwy 43 Car Club; full gallery here.

There were four Cobras at the show, but pics of only two:

    a Factory Five Cobra replica

and a mystery Cobra kit that was actually quite hideous in person (dig that horrible custom roll bar).

My mechanic Gerry was there with his 1966 Corvette 427.

There was this very nice Yenko Nova.

A 1962 Morris Minor which belongs to my former boss, Rick.

A Lotus 7 replica by Fijier Bros. of Toronto (now defunct).

And a little motorcycle engined roadster called a Berkeley.

This donked-out school bus caught David's attention.

My nephew's show favorite was this Roush-powered Mustang with scissor doors, nicknamed "Orange Crush." We drove home along with this car on the highway, a nice surprise encounter.

My show favorite was this beautiful 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner. Don't know why they showed it on a flatbed.

Speaking of flatbeds, we passed this mid-1970s Corvette on the way home; it was conked out on the highway, being loaded onto a trailer. Bummer.

I didn't actually see this car at the show -- the site was just too big for my young nephew to walk the whole thing -- but the photo caught my attention.

Does anyone know what type of car this is? Is it a kit of some kind? The nose badge seems reminiscent of the Lotus logo...
