Thread: Weber tuning

  1. #201
car is home... and needs alot of work. Had hoped for better... but ok, the others are no better if not restored.

Foot wells are corroded , and they are already once renewed. Need welding.... same issue as on the red one at the time ..

    Water pump has play... alot

Exterior paint is OK but redone ever by a amateur.... sure no prof job.

so we have goods according the price ...

Car was bought by Dutch dealer in 2015 from a guy in San Francisco.

o well, about what we can accept for that price... good ones become expensive ... not suited for rally driving but to be showed at cars&coffee or shops....

    Barry,

When you get it all fixed up it will be better than new. Post some pictures shopping what you are doing.

The photos of the car looked great. When you are done it will be worth it.

    i wrenching.....

    - remove all carpets to find any rust , will need new carpet set
    - remove the seats.... the better ones out of the rally car comes in
    - remove all non OEM stuff like radio , amplifier, electric antenna, extra lights... etc
    - remove the 4 extra side lights on the fenders.... US stuff , pitty , big holes to cover ....
    - have renewed ignition cables , one was broken
    - now lowering the 2 Weber carbs.... they had mounted under each 2 heat shields "gaskets" to clear the choke from a support...and by doing so there are 2 points pressed in the hood by the 2 bolts of one of the K&N airfilters... damned.
I will cut off a little bit the support , so i can use 1 heat shield/carb .....to clear the hood.
    - make a list of things to order..... for Christmas

now a Plus point is that it are 2 Weber carbs ( vertical types) and not more the old OEM's which are difficult to get them right...

Sorry, that rust does not look good.

Those BMW E9 types are famous for corrosion John.... so after 47 years you see that.... or a restored one... normaly to see in advance on the price tag

ofcourse one hopes always that it isn't that bad.... o well, after welding it will be OK again... for many years "rally"
We have now also better products to protect it ... like spraying paint ( Dinitrol) in the hollow parts.

for rally we don't need the showroom types, that would be crazy expensive to drive that way.

    Barry,

That looks like quite a bit of rust but at least it can be repaired.

nothing to be scared of James, just cut away till solid steel and fill the hole with new plate/welding.... but yes , alot of work....
lucky, all rust is in bottom plates, not in the outer body... so no filler, sandpaper and respray needed for the moment....
